What is Absinth?
Our Absinth is made from the dried leaves of Wormwood (also known as Absinth Wormwood). This plant contains various powerful substances. The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries. Wormwood consists mainly of volatile oils (alpha and beta thujone), which are known for their stimulating and mildly psychoactive effects. Sesquiterpene-lactones and phenolic acids have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Flavonoids are antioxidants that help protect cells against damage from free radicals. Finally, Lignans and Glycosides contribute to hormonal balance and support the body in detoxification.
The biochemical composition of Wormwood is particularly complex and unique. In addition to the main components mentioned, the plant also contains minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, essential to various bodily functions. The bitter flavour compounds in Wormwood stimulate the production of gastric juices and bile, which promotes digestion. The bitter ingredients in Wormwood are among the strongest found in nature.
How to use Absinth?
Absinth comes in the form of dried, finely chopped leaves. This makes it easy to dose and use. It has a very bitter taste. This extract is often used as an herbal tea to support digestion. Use 1 or 2 teaspoons per cup of hot water, let the leaves steep for 5 to 20 minutes and then strain. Preferably, drink the tea after a meal for the most optimal effect on digestion. You can use a flavouring or sweetener to soften the bitter taste.
For optimal extraction of the active substances, it is important not to let the water boil when pouring it over the herbs. Water of about 90°C is ideal: let boiled water cool for a minute or two before using it. A well-sealed teapot or mug with a lid helps to retain the volatile substances during steeping.

Where does Absinth come from?
Wormwood originally grew in Europe, North Africa and Asia. This plant naturally occurs in dry, rocky areas and sunny environments. Thanks to its silvery leaves and bitter smell (and taste!), Artemisia Absinthium is easily recognisable. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians already used Wormwood for its medicinal properties. The herb was used to support digestion and combat parasites. Over the years, it has played an important role in traditional remedies and rituals. Better known is the drink absinthe. This poisonous green drink consists of wormwood in addition to alcohol. The substance thujone from the plant has a somewhat hallucinogenic effect at a very high dose. This is why the plant and the drink absinthe has been very popular with artists and painters over the years, such as Van Gogh.
