What is Galangae?
Our Galangae (Alpinia Officinarum) consists entirely of 100% dried and coarsely cut Galangae, a root that resembles ginger in appearance but is thinner, with a reddish-brown skin and a light yellow core. The taste of Galangae is mildly spicy and peppery with a subtle citrus-like touch, making it a popular ingredient in Thai and Indonesian cuisine. Besides its culinary popularity, Galangae is rich in nutrients, including flavonoids, antioxidants and essential oils such as alpinen and galangin. Galangin is known for its potential antibacterial and antiviral properties. Galangae also has a supportive effect on blood circulation and digestion and is often mentioned as a natural aphrodisiac. Thanks to these versatile properties, Galangae is not only used in cooking but also as an herb that can make a positive contribution to a healthy lifestyle.
How do you use Galangae?
Galangae (Alpinia Officinarum) comes in the form of 50 grams of coarsely cut and dried herbs. Although Galangae can be consumed in various ways, we recommend brewing it as tea. Use 1 or 2 teaspoons per cup of hot water, let the tea steep for 5 to 20 minutes and then strain. The longer you let the tea steep, the stronger the flavour will be. The tea has a mildly spicy, citrus-like taste. Use a flavouring or sweetener to make the drink sweeter to taste.
For optimal extraction of the active ingredients, it is important not to let the water boil when pouring it over the herbs. Water of about 90°C is ideal: allow boiled water to cool for a minute or two before using it. A well-sealed teapot or mug with a lid helps to retain the volatile compounds during steeping.
